Weronika Falkowska fought hard but didn’t manage to defeat Kateryna Bondarenko in the final round of qualifying. Even though she lost 3:6, 6:7(3), she will get a chance to play in the main draw of BNP Paribas Poland Open as a “lucky loser”.
The latest Tokyo Olympics entry list revision and a series of injuries led to five spots opening in the main draw in Gdynia. Fate has brought Weronika Falkowska and Kateryna Bondarenko together again. Would she prefer to face a different, less demanding rival? – No! – she replies with no hesitation. – Now I know how to play her.
The most important change happened on top of the singles draw. Due to participation in the Olympics, Yulia Putintseva has withdrawn from BNP Paribas Poland Open. Her spot is now occupied by Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, who is the ninth seed and will face Magdalena Fręch in the first round.
Katarzyna Kawa, Urszula Radwańska and Weronika Baszak will play in the singles tournament as well.
Doubles draw was also published today. The second “wild card” was awarded to Weronika Baszak and Varvara Flink. In the first round the Polish-Russian pairing will face Anna Danilina of Kazachstan and Lidziya Marozava of Belarus. Weronika Falkowska and Paula Kania-Choduń, who have been practicing together for a few days, will play the fourth seeds Kateryna Bondarenko and Katarzyna Piter (therefore Falkowska and Bondarenko will face each other for the third time in one tournament).
In doubles we have two more Polish pairings. Magdalena Fręch and Katarzyna Kawa, winner and runner-up of just finished National Championships, have drawn Alena Fomina (Russia) and Tereza Mrdeza (Croatia), while Anna Hertel and Martyna Kubka will face Irina Bara (Romania), who won an ITF in Wrocław a few weeks ago, and Varvara Lepchenko (USA).
Monday Order of Play starts at 11 a.m. and includes six singles matches and three doubles meetings. Polish players will certainly appreciate crowd support. Not before 3 p.m. Weronika Falkowska will try to get a revenge over Kateryna Bondarenko for her Sunday loss. This meeting will be followed by a match between Urszula Rwadwańska and Kristina Kucova.
