Polish tennis Olympians found out who their first round rivals are. The event will take place at Ariake Tennis Park. First matches will be played on Saturday and Sunday. An exciting weekend is ahead of us with many emotions from both Tokyo and Gdynia. Both events are broadcast on TVP Sport.
Iga Świątek is seeded with no. 6 and will face Mona Barthel (WTA 210) in the first round. In theory an all polish battle for a medal is possible but first Magda would have to eliminate Aryna Sabalenka (no. 3).
Hubert Hurkacz, this year’s Wimbledon semifinalist, will play against Marton Fucsovics – the highest ranked unseeded player (ATP – 38). Kamil Majchrzak was drawn against Miomir Kecmanovic, who is currently the last player in Top 50.
Polish doubles pairing Magda Linette and Alicja Rosolska will meet the fourth seeds, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jessica Pegula. On paper the draw looks better for our men’s doubles – Hubert Hurkacz and Łukasz Kubot. The fifth seeds will face Jan-Lennard Struff and Alexander Zverev – single players in theory; however, good in doubles too.
Mixed doubles lists are closing on July 27.
So far the best result in the history of Polish tennis at the Olympics belongs to a doubles team. Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg reach the quarterfinals in Beijing 2008. Marcin Matkowki, BNP Paribas Poland Open tournament director, represented Poland four times at the Olympics.
