Katarzyna Kawa’s 6:2 6:4 win over the highest seed Irina-Camelia Begu shows that Polish tennis players need tournaments such as BNP Paribas Poland Open.

The Pole is no. 143 in the WTA rankings whereas the Romanian is 81. It is worth recalling that Begu defeated Petra Martic at this year’s Wimbledon and lost to Iga Świątek. At Roland Garros she was very close to winning a set off of Serena Williams.

Katarzyna Kawa took part in a post match press conference online:

My self confidence is growing with each win. I play better and better and both my body and my head are handling it well. I’m happy to be moving forwards, next match tomorrow.

I saw that when I was too defensive, I was losing points. I kept forcing myself to take initiative and be offensive. I had the tools and won many more points when being aggressive. I’m glad it worked out in the end.

I don’t think there is any tennis player fully satisfied with their game after a win. At least I never am. But in general I’m pretty happy with this match.

I can feel the energy from the Polish crowd. It’s hard to describe it but it really gives me power and doesn’t let me give up. If fans believe in me, I believe in myself even more. I haven’t played in front of a Polish crowd in a long time and it means a lot. I have a lot of support from them, from my family, from my coach, even my grandma came here from Krynica Zdrój. I’m glad they can be here with me.
